Day 1 to Retire by 40 – Beginning My Journey to Writing Full-Time… Again

Yesterday afternoon, as I walked to my car on my way home from work as a School IT Tech, I decided, “I’ve had enough. I will retire by 40 if it’s the last thing I do.”

I’m sure you’re wondering, ‘Why is she sharing this with me?’ Let me tell you…

If you’re reading this blog, there’s a big chance you also want to become successful as a writer. Becoming successful as a writer sometimes means a person still has a day job. But that is not my dream. My dream is to be a work from home writer and retire by 40. My idea of being a work from home writer involves blogging, writing novels, and helping other people to fulfill similar dreams.

I’m sharing with you my journey.

As mentioned before, I am an elementary school IT tech. While I’m sure that sounds interesting, it is not on my list of career minded goals. I never dreamed of fixing Chromebooks for students, plug in audio cables for teachers, or monitor students in the cafeteria during lunch. It’s not a terrible job. In fact, there are many who love it, but I can’t continue to ignore my yearning to write.

I have 6 manuscripts in some stage of completion. Two blogs that gained momentum that I’ve ignored for reasons I couldn’t control. Another blog I’m dying to launch. And an author website to put it all together.

Retire by 40

My view when i decided i would do whatever necessary to retire by 40
My view when i decided i would do whatever necessary to retire by 40

Yesterday, on that eighth of a mile walk from my office to my car, I gave myself a deadline that I’m committing to. Currently, I’m 38, plus a few months. That gives me less than 2 years! But I grew a human in my belly in less than 38 weeks, and this seems a lot less complicated than that. It will take focus and determination, which I have.

I have 649 days to turn this dream into a reality. With complete transparency, I have yet to make any money by blogging.

Goal 1 – Break even monthly. That includes expenses such as internet, Bluehost (web hosting), Canva subscription, Rank Math SEO subscription, and others.

Goal 2 – Pay myself back for the years of expenses to get here.

Goal 3 – $1k month

Goal 4 – $2,500 month (almost replaces my income)

Goal 5 – $5k month (by July 2023)

Goal 6 – $7,500 month (by December 2023)

Goal 7 – $10k month (by August 2024)

When I say retire by 40, I don’t mean that I plan to never work again. I mean I will never work for another person again. Like never again. And it doesn’t just include me, this includes my husband as well. He will work alongside me, helping me to run the businesses I’m working hard to create.

I’ll share my journey to rertire by 40 with you. My income. What I’m doing. Where I’m at. I’ll share my bad ideas and my good ones.

Comment below with your writing struggles and I’ll put myself to work on that topic.
