How I Got Here

Stories have been quintessential to my life forever. My mother and her mother loved books, so we always had an abundance of books lying around the house as a child. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to read.

With love for reading, I was inspired to tell my own stories. For some years, they were just verbally said to my closest friends. But, they inspired me to put pen to paper and write them down.

By the time I was in high school, I was inspired to write a book. A book I could get published and ultimately end up have a snippet published in an issue of Cosmopolitan magazine.

For almost eight years, life prevented me from writing. I married my husband. We had real issues, like family hospitalizations, family members passed away. We even began hunting for a house.

At the time we began house hunting, I uncovered the book I started in high school. I read it to my husband, and he encouraged me to pick it back up and pursue my dreams. I first began typing up the last version and soon decided to take the basic story and rewrite the entire story.

Well, that book was coming along, but as I developed the character’s backstory, I decided to write a prequel. Before either of them was complete, I was inspired to write another story intended to be a novella.

Then, life took over. We bought a house. House needed work. Family stuff. Work stuff. Husband needed a new job. Blah, blah, blah.

Occasionally, I would open the files on my computer and lose myself in my stories as I’d edit, rewrite, and enjoy different parts.

It’s been about twenty years since I began writing what is now a four-book series in high school, and about twelve years since I was inspired for the second storyline.

I’ve researched time periods, other countries, methods of writing. I’ve experimented with different word processor programs. And I’ve learned a lot. I want to share all the things I’ve learned to help you be successful, too.

As an aspiring author, I want to share my journey with others to learn from my mistakes and my wins. That’s what Writerbury is about.

Why Writerbury? It’s a play on my last name, Waterbury. Having worked in the school system for almost fourteen years, nine in elementary, I’ve been called many names. Like Watermelon, Strawberry, Waterfairy, Waterburg, Waterbird, Sprinklefairy, Liberry, etc. And so, when trying to decide on a unique name to use for a blog about writing, I couldn’t think of anything more, well, me.

I hope you enjoy reading about what I have learned and what I feel you need to know. In the meantime, sign up for my email list and stay in the know with my weekly newsletter!
